Personally, I find that fashion inspires me most when two contrasting concepts, ideas, or subcultures can merge seamlessly together to form an entirely new look. I love seeing opposites relate and compliment one another, and more than anything else, I love seeing preconceived rules being broken. Punk rock and urban hip hop cultures were once polar opposites, yet now the two are constantly being used to enhance one another in music and fashion. Preppy is now edgy. Bohemian hippie style is now opulent and chic. Sporty is now sophisticated. Everything is always being reborn into something new and I think it's truly a testament to how innovative and creative we are as a global society.

False Representation

One day, I hope to wake up and find that we place less importance on valuing and defining ourselves by that which is exterior and extraneous to who we are. We define ourselves by our looks, our clothes, our preferences, likes and dislikes, actions, thoughts, ethnicity, culture, and money. This is individualism and this would not be a problem if we did not use it to separate ourselves from one another, to create an illusion that we are not all the same. We are all the same, for we carry the same burdensome heart. Do we each not ache and hurt and feel joy and love in the same way? Do we not all fear loneliness, abandonment, and rejection? The only thing which our hearts need is love, yet we find it so difficult to acquire and give love. And, if we all want to give and receive the same thing from one another, why is it so difficult to do so? What is it that prevents us from loving and connecting with one another?

Personally, I believe we can blame everything on our ego. Our ego is our own perception and definition of ourselves and we have based it upon things which lay outside of ourselves. Because all the superficial material and ideas which we have used to define us are truly irrelevant to who we are, we consequently don't know who we are, don't know what we want, and have devalued our own self-worth. I am not my car. I am not the music I listen to. I am not my job. I am not my neighborhood. I am not my past. I am but one heart beating with an infinite capacity and capability for love and that is what all of us are. But, because we can not see beyond our ego; the false identity of ourselves, we barricade ourselves off from love, the one thing we need to feel complete. Stop trying to define yourself and just be. Ignore your desire for individualism for a moment and take notice of all the ways in which you are the same as everyone else. We are but one.

The Road Not Taken

 photo 2014-05-04-17-30-56_zps3e1a4b81.jpg

When I was in sixth grade my teacher read my class a famous poem by Robert Frost, "The Road Not Taken". At the time I didn't get it and thought it was pretty stupid. Why would anyone want to travel down a path no one else was taking? Why would anyone want to subject themselves to such cruel uncertainty? It would be a whole lot wiser to take the other path. For one, you knew where it led to and what the conditions would be like. Secondly, it was sure to be much safer. Third, you would certainly make steady road companions with whom you could have endless marshmallow and graham cracker bonfires with. With this said, why on earth would anyone want to take the other road?

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;        5
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,        10
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.        15
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.        20

This past year I have thought about this poem a lot and it has come to mean a lot to me; suffice it to say, I have changed my perspective on it as well. Like Mr.Frost, I have decided to take the road less traveled. While I have given my decision a lot of thought and subjected myself to several sleepless nights over it, it wasn't a difficult decision to make. I am incredibly anxious and scared about my journey but the truth is, I have no interest in going where the other path leads to. While I am most certainly uncertain of where my final destination is, I am, however, certain I will discover where it is I want to be. My path is unpaved, yet this is the way I want it be. I will discover places most will never see, I will have stories no one else will be able to tell, and I will run into other lonesome wanderers with equally unique experiences; this is undoubtedly the adventure I want to have and the road I want to take.

How do we find tranquility within the chaos that surrounds us everyday? It's those moments when we hear silence while surrounded by noise or see beauty when looking upon desolation that reveal our true optimism and resilience. Have you ever admired the face of someone who is not considered beautiful or began to love a song you did not initially enjoy? You will find that you have these moments because you are focusing on the small details which you appreciate. The details are often times overlooked and go unnoticed yet we can find all that we are searching for within them. We can find love, hope, strength and clarity by focusing on the small things which enrich our lives rather than the big things which burden it. No matter how blessed we find ourselves to be, life will never be a portrait of ideality; something will always be lacking. I often feel overwhelmed by change so I look to things which have remained the same. I refuse to dwell on the uncertainty of what is or what is to come and instead find peace in that which is still certain. All that we want yet feel without is right in front of us; we just need to look a little harder to find it sometimes.

We can not know light with out dark; this is the importance of contrast. Often times, we only look to appreciate the light or that which is beautiful, however the darkness deserves just as much appreciation. We try to ignore and avoid the darkness because it is unpleasant and difficult for most of us to deal with, but familiarity with it is crucial to the understanding and appreciation of light. Is the light not that much more visible and beautiful when paired next to that which is dark? Would we still gaze upon the night sky at the beauty of the moon and the stars if the sky wasn't black? The darkness is unpleasant for a reason; we are not meant to become comfortable there. We are meant to be continually searching for the light. Just as we can only clearly see the moon and stars when they are amongst the night sky, we can only find peace and solace when we have experienced chaos. The darkness should not be taken in vain, for it is the only way we will know the light.
